Fundamentals of Lighting (FOL)



ABOUT THE COURSE

This ten-module course provides participants with an introduction to the fundamentals of illumination. It gives a comprehensive overview of basic lighting principles, lamp and luminaire types, lighting calculations, and controls, as well as functional and aesthetic applications best practices. This

course is ideal for architects, engineers, designers, contractors, sales reps, customer service reps, manufacturers, distributors, and students. A full description of each module will follow.

FOL 2021 will be held online via Zoom sessions. Attendance with audio and video is required. A recurring Zoom link will be sent out to registrants before the first session.

Pre-registration is required and registration fees must be paid in advance. Your registration fee includes all course materials, which you must pick up prior to Day 1. Pick up time and location to be announced.

Note - The IES FUNDAMENTALS OF LIGHTING ED-100 course is pass/fail. Students must attend a minimum of 80% of classes, participate in weekly quizzes and score 70% or better on a 40-question Final Exam.

Chris Slaughter studied architectural engineering and computer science at CU Boulder. He has worked in design at Lighting Design Alliance, manufacturing and R&D at Acuity Brands, and is now a lighting rep at Visual Interest. His interests include more things than he has time for and he has a hard time not giving more information than you asked for. He is passionate about the art and science of lighting, cultivating lighting education, the outdoors, and doing things right the first time.

Gina Heumann is an interior design professor at the Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design. She earned her BS in architectural studies and an MArch from University of Illinois with a specialization in lighting design. After graduation, she spent over a decade working as a lighting designer for a variety of A/E and lighting design firms in Minneapolis, and began teaching after moving to Colorado in 2006. She went back for a Masters in Education to boost her teaching skills. Gina also consults on lighting projects for Lighting Forms in San Francisco. She has been an active member of the IESNA, has passed the LC exam twice, and has been teaching for the Rocky Mountain Section since 2008.

FOL 2021 will be held over a period of three weeks on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, ending with a Saturday "sprint" finish on April 17th.

Week 3:

  • Saturday, April 17, 8:00 AM - 2:00 PM

Registration is now open! Sign up by February 19th before prices go up. Final registration closes March 29th. You must register by March 22nd to guarantee your books and materials by the first class.
